Betty L. Carlson, 79, of Newton died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin officiating. Burial will be in Veteran's Section of Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call Monday from noon to 8 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name or to First Lutheran Church.

The daughter of Ralph F. and Gunda M. Olson Kenyon-Freier, she was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Calamus. She graduated from Newton Senior High School and attended the University of Iowa. On Dec. 7, 1947, she married B.F. Carlson at First Lutheran Church in Newton. She was a legal secretary from 1944 to 1948 and a secretary for Newton Manufacturing from 1948 to 1955. Recently, she was an advocate in Newton area nursing homes. She was a member of Newton First Lutheran Church, Page Turners Book Club, ex-POW group activist and the TOGs (Terrific Old Gals) group. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing and cooking and her grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Sara (Ron) Shockey of Newton; five grandchildren; a brother, Ralph F. Kenyon of Tehachapi, Calif.; a step-sister, Dorothy Gerials of Chicago, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, H. J. Freier; her husband, B.F. Carlson; her son, Brice F. Carlson in infancy; and a daughter, Karen.
