Verlie L. Brandt, 85, of Newton died Sunday, March 26, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Carrie Lewis of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newton officiating. Burial will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Callender Cemetery in Callender.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Conrad C. and Hattie J. Hansen Brandt, he was born July 22, 1920, in rural Callender. He graduated from Callender High School in 1937. On Jan. 31, 1943, he married Maxine Burnett in Fort Dodge. He worked as a traffic manager for The Vernon Company for 28 years and retired in 1984. Prior to that, he worked for Railway Express Agency. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, working on the computer and his morning coffee groups.

Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Vivian Daniel of Nampa, Idaho, and Bernice Hedeen of Fort Dodge; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
