ALTOONA — Gerald Len Bauer, 89, formerly of Colfax, died at his home in Altoona on Tuesday, March 21, 2006, after an extended illness.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Burial will be at McKeever Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home, with family present to greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Howard Street Christian Church of Colfax or Mercy Hospice.

The son of James Leonard and Bertha Hunter Bauer, he was born Aug. 9, 1916, in rural Colfax. He attended rural elementary school, was a 1933 graduate of Colfax High School and a 1937 graduate of Grinnell College. Following the death of his father and graduation from college, he returned to the family farm.

On Aug. 14, 1942, he married Beverly Plummer at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax. The Bauers farmed until 1967 when they became owners of Bauer Insurance and Real Estate. After retiring, they moved to Altoona in 1997 and wintered in Sun City, Ariz., for more than 20 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and raised golden retriever pups and thoroughbred race horses.

Mr. Bauer was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth Rinaldo.

He is survived by his wife.
