Chester Wilkerson

Chester Marvin Wilkerson, 67, of 416 N. 3rd Ave. E., a resident of Newton for three years, died of a heart attack Thursday evening, Sept. 7, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Todd Schlitter, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Bethel Grove Cemetery in Marshall County.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association will be accepted.

Survivors are a sister, Janet (Mrs. William “Bill”) Harrison of Newton; a nephew, William Harrison of Newton; a niece, Erin (Mrs. Bradley) Bucklin of Newton; a special friend, Madelyn Vandehaar of Ankeny; a great-nephew; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister in infancy.

Mr. Wilkerson, a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 659, both of Des Moines, was an Army veteran of World War II.

He had been employed by the Phillips Petroleum Co. and had been an inspector for the Department of Transportation when he retired in 1976.

The son of Harry O. and Edith Price Wilkerson, he was born Jan. 13, 1922 in Marietta in Marshall County, was graduated from Albion High School and Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines and attended Drake University in Des Moines.

Mr. Wilkerson had resided in Des Moines and San Francisco, Calif., prior to moving to Newton.
