Benjamin Verwers

Benjamin Verwers, 81, of 612 E. 8th St. N., a resident of Newton since 1977, and a former Lynnville-Kellogg area farmer, died of cancer Sunday morning, June 11, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Rick Thompson, interim pastor of First Assembly of God, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Arlene; a son, Donald of Kent, Wash.; two daughters, Betty Fry of Altoona and Saundra Backus of Swansea, Ill.; a step-daughter, Mary Creech of Newton; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers, Henry Verwers of Pella and Raymond Verwers and Melvin Verwers, both of Newton; and two sisters, Dorothy Van Gent of New Sharon and Margaret Ridgeway of Kingman, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Lauretta, a sister, Cora, and two brothers, William and Marion.

Mr. Verwers was a member of First Christian Church and Kellogg and Laurel Co-Ops.

The son of Jacob and Dena Rozenberg Verwers, he was born April 19, 1908 in Buckley Creek.

He was married to Arlene Rose Madoll Jan. 9, 1975 in Newton.
