Alice Buchanan

Mrs. Roy (Alice) Buchanan, 73, of Rt. 1, Newton, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Saturday morning, Dec. 17, 1983, at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace Funeral Home.

Memorial Contributions to the First Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Thomas R. Buchanan of Newton and Richard C. Buchanan of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas A. (Margaret) Atwood of Newton; and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers Edgar Sabin of Newton and Wilbur Sabin of Baxter; and four sisters, Mabel Wheeler of Wausau ,Wi., Mrs. Peter (Irene) Zwank of Pella, Mrs. Elmer (Mary) Swigart of Salt Lake City, UT., and Emma Jackson of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Everett, Alfred and Leslie Sabin, and a grandson, Craig Thomas Buchanan.

Mrs. Buchanan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, United Presbyterian Women's Association, Amboy Grange, NN7H Club and the Newton Camera Club.

She had been active in 4-H club work, the Farm Bureau Women's Association and Girl Scout work.

Mrs. Buchanan baked and decorated many cakes, including wedding cakes and those for other occasions.

She married Roy Thomas Buchanan Aug. 31, 1935 in Newton.

She is the daughter of Calvin and Maggie R. Simons Sabin and was born April 15, 1910 in Newton, was graduated from newton Community High School and attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa. ~ the Newton Daily News, 19 Dec 1983
