Called Home
Mrs. Elizabeth K. Witmer was born in Lancaster County, Penna., Feb. 6, 1900 (incorrect date if she was married in 1869). God called her to the better world. She was the daughter of John and Maria Kendig, and was married to Jacob R. Witmer July 4, 1869. About 12 years ago she gave her heart to God in unity with the Evangelical Church, of which she has been a faithful member, always doing her best.
Dear mother will be missed at home, she always greeted with a smile. Her children were shocked when the words came: “Mother is dead.” But she is not dead; she only sleeps to awake in a better world.
As she lay in her casket, who could not say but that she was in the arms of Jesus, quietly resting from a pilgrimage of earth, and her memory, we hope, may fit us and prepare us to meet her again.
She leaves to mourn a husband, together with two sons and five daughters; also a mother, three sisters and five brothers. Four of her daughters are married, namely Mrs. P.R. Pink, Sherman Township; Mrs. Geo. Sapp, Mrs. W.H. Sumpter, Mrs. B.F. Sumpter, all of Colfax.
Mother, here your place is vacant.
Vacant in our hearts and home;
But in heaven it is taken,
Where the Savior bid you come.
So, indeed, the home is desolate, and grief comes with crushing force to the loved ones, but God hath need of just such bright flowers in the bright home above.
The family have our hearts’ sympathy in this, their sad hour of bereavement.
Services were held at the Evangelical Church of Greencastle, at 1 o’clock p.m., by Rev. Lampman, after which Mrs. Witmer was laid to rest beside her loving sister, who had gone years before.Greencastle, Iowa, Feb. 13, 1900.
