Elsie Watt, 90 Dies Sunday; Rites Tuesday
Funeral services will be held from the Morgan Funeral Home Tuesday at 2 p.m. for Miss Elsie Watt, 90 who died from a malignant ailment at the Skiff Memorial hospital Sunday.
Miss Watt was born June 15, 1856, on a farm in Sherman Township, one of 12 children of Charles and Margaret Hamilton Watt, who lived in a log house one mile north of the Sandhill Grange hall.
She taught school for many years in Jasper County and with the exception of 27 years spent in California has made her home in or near Newton.The last member of her family, she is survived by several nieces and nephews, Mrs. J.N. Hammerly and Arthur Watt of Newton, C.W. Watt of Colfax, Mrs. Ora Emmack, Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Genevieve Woody of Madison, Wisc., both of whom will attend the services, also Mrs. Lena Penquite, Mrs. Neva McMurray both of Santa Ana, Calif., Mrs. Irene Stamm, Willowbrook, Calif., and Mrs. Florence Crew of Los Angeles.
The Rev. Clarence Bigelow of Des Moines will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Mrs. Maurice Rodgers will sing, “Rock of Ages” and “Face to Face” with Mrs. Paul Murdy as accompanist.
Pallbearers will be Loren Penquite, Lawrence Hammerly, C.W. Birchard, Donald Hammerly, Parker Watt and Phillip Watt. Mrs. Florence McIntire and Mrs. Neva Rhone will be in charge of floral tributes.
Miss Watt was a member of the Christian Church and the Daily News Three Quarter Century Club.
