The Newton Journal (v. 33: no. 40) - Wed., Oct. 21, 1891 reads:
"OBITUARY

DIED. - At his residence in Newton, Iowa, Oct. 16, 1891, of penitonitis, Mr. Cassie Stock, aged 33* years.

The death of this gentleman came like a shock to the people of Newton. It seemed that but the day before that he was seen on the streets full of life and good spirits, and that his well-known laugh was still singing in their ears. And that it was impossible that death had come to him and taken him from us. He had been ailing for a few days, but was seen on the street Wednesday. Mr. Stock formerly lived near Greencastle, but for the past eight or nine years had lived in Newton. He was an active, industrious man, and faithful in all positions he had engaged in. At the time of his death he was electrician in the City Electric Light plant, and highly prized as a competent, careful man in the place. He had hosts of friends, was a member of the Free Masons and the Modern Woodmen. He leaves a wife and a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his untimely death.

His funeral, which was largely attended, took place at the M. E. church last Sabbath, Rev. C. C. Harrah officiating. At the close of these services, the Woodmen took charge of the body, and headed by K. T. band, proceeded to the cemetery, where with solemn services of the Woodmen, all that was mortal of Mr. Stock was laid to rest.

The family request the JOURNAL to return sincere thanks to any and all who, during the sickness and burial of Mr. Stock, rendered so many and such grateful services.

"DEATH OF MR. CASSIE STOCK,

MINGO, OCT. 20, 1891

Editor Journal - In addition to your notice of Mr. Stock's death, please insert a word from his boyhood's home. The community little thought the hasty messenger should break to them the sad tidings of the death of one so pleasantly remembered and loved from earliest childhood. Cheerful, earnest and trusted, ready for every good word and work, a boy whom good wishes and hopes had followed to the development of manhood. It seems not so sad when the aged die for like the ripened grain they are ready, but when one in the prime of life and the noonday of manhood is stricken down we seem to shrink from submitting. But like a conquering hero he has net the waves and crossed the river, --but our ministrations of christian friendship extend to that desolute home, to soften if possible the anguish that has entered there, also to the aged parents whose hearts are broken at the thought that their dear Cass will never enter their home again."
