The Newton Daily News (no. 30) - Tues., Dec. 27, 1921
"OBITUARY OF WELL KNOWN NEWTON MAN

James Stock died at his home in Newton, Dec. 21, 1921, at the age of seventy-six and nineteen days.

The deceased was born in Norton Township, Summit County, Ohio, Dec. 2, 1845, the fifth child of James and Sarah Stock. In 1856, at the age of eleven, he came with the family overland to Jasper county, and settled in Clear Creek township. Here he attended the old Greenside school. In early manhood he was converted, and was baptized at Rawstern Forn in Clear Creek. He first united with the United Brethren church and later with the Christian church at the time of his death. As a young man he chose the carpenter trade as his occupation and was apprenticed to uncle Billy Rogers. Later he spent several years at farming and was also in business for a time. All his active life was spent in Jasper county with the exception of one and one-half years when he worked as a carpenter at Atchison, Kansas. He lived for several years in Colfax and spent the last five years of his life in Newton.

Mr. Stock was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Dodd of Clear Creek in November, 1874. Six children were born to them, three of whom, Genia, Ada and Mrs. Clara Campbell have died. The other three who survive their father are Ray, of Des Moines, Frank, of Colfax, and Mrs. Alta Armstrong of Sioux City. The wife and mother died in 1904, and in 1907 Mr. Stock was again married to Mrs. Sarah Stock, his brother's widow, who survives him. There are three sisters and one brother residing in Jasper county and another brother in California.

The deceased was a member of the Masonic order and held membership in Riverside Lodge, of Colfax.

Mr. Stock's last illness was long and fraught with much suffering. He bore it all with exceptional patience, nursed and cared for by his good wife. He has built an enviable reputation for integrity and square dealing, and was the kind of man concerning whom one might say many good things with a clear conscience. His faith in God and his loyalty to the church were vigorous to the end of his life."
