The Newton Record Thursday, February 16, 1899
Stock, Sarah (McClaughan)

Died at her residence in Clear Creek Township, on February 8, 1899, Mrs. Sarah Stock, aged 80 years, 5 months and 11 days. Mother Stock was born in North Cumberland County, Penn., August 28, 1818. Her parentage was German and Scotch-Irish; her maiden name was Sarah McClaughan. When five years of age her parents moved to Portage County, Ohio, where she was married to James Stock on March 21, 1838, the ceremony being performed at her father’s residence by Rev. Father Ham of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of which she had been an earnest and faithful member from early childhood. After her marriage her home was in Summit County, Ohio, until 1856 when they moved to Jasper County, Iowa, where she lived until her death. After coming to Iowa she joined the United Brethren Church at Clyde, remaining a consistent member of that church until her death.

To father and mother Stock were born thirteen children, eleven of them in Ohio, two dying in infancy. Garrie, the youngest, died in Clear Creek Township on April 28, 1890, aged 28 years. Cass died in Newton in 1891, aged 33 years, so that the happy reunion with her children lends joy to the hearts of those who deplore the loss of a loving mother and grandmother.

Mother Stock’s early life was the life of a pioneer; her home in Ohio was an almost unbroken wilderness until subdued by the hardy foresters subsisting on venison from the forest and fish from the lake, and for many years after coming to Iowa her neighbors were few and far between. She was a woman of the highest integrity and worth, ever ready with heart and hand to alleviate the sorrows and burdens of those about her, irrespective of social or financial standing. Her sufferings were all borne without complaint with patience and Christian resignation.

The funeral was from the Ashton Chapel Feb. 10, and was conducted by Rev. John Mowry, assisted by Rev. James Carr, an intimate friend of the family for more than forty years, who paid the highest tribute to her memory. Although the cold was intense, a very large concourse of friends attended the funeral. Father Stock, though five years her senior, survives her.
