Leo Carl Toedt, 99, of 500 N. First St., died of heart failure, Saturday, Dec. 16, at his home.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, January 3, 2001, 11:00 a.m. at Congregtional United Church of Christ, with Rev. David O'Rourke, Interim Pastor officiating. Memorials will be accepted in his name to Congregational United Church of Christ or Park Centre of Newton Activity fund.

The son of Herman and Ida Tinnermeier Toedt, he was born May 6, 1901, in Mariposa Twonship, Jasper County. He attended rural schools. He married Lena Baker Jan. 31, 1923. He lived within 10 miles of his birthplace all of his life.

He was a member of Newton Congregational United Church of Christ; the Jasper County Farm Bureau; Oak ridge Grange; Historical Society; CROP; 4-H leader, Poweshiek Jasper Farm Service company at Grinnell for 11 years and was past president for three years.

He married Irene Moffitt Guessford May 27, 1944, in Des Moines. He farmed all his life, retiring in 1970.

Survivors include two sons an daughters-in-law, Dale and Joann of Tulsa, Okla., and Lynn and Janet of Wilmington, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Donald J. Einck of Denver, and Rosemary and Edgar Krueger of Baxter; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, one daughter, three brothers and two sisters. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, December 29, 2000
