Maurice Bernhardt Schroeder, 90, of Newton died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at Park Centre Health Care Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in the veterans section. VFW Post 1655 and American Legion Post 111 will provide military services. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Monday after 5 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name.

The son of Thomas L. Schroeder and Anna Pech, he was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Rock Island, Ill. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1933. He served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a locksmith and laborer for Los Angeles County, Calif., and was a member of Locksmith Organization of America, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Rio Rancho, N.M., and assemblyman for Senior Citizens in the California State Legislature.

Mr. Schroeder was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton and Sandoval Masonic Lodge AF/AM in Rio Rancho, N.M. He lived in California, New Mexico and Arkansas, traveled extensively throughout the United States and lived in many different locations. He moved to Newton in 2004. He enjoyed woodworking, dancing, traveling and singing in the church choir.

Survivors include a son, Dwight Schroeder of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; two daughters, Maureen (George) Hagele of Hot Springs, Ark., and Connie (Herman) Cupples of Newton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Aletha Hill of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and a nephew and niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charlotte Schroeder.
