Evelyn A. Schmidt, 93, of Newton died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at USA Healthcare in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Roger Russell of Wittemberg Church in rural Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

The family will greet friends Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home and following the burial with a coffee time at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in her name, to Jasper County Senior Citizens or to Wittemberg Church. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Nelson) Rombs, she was born May 1, 1912, in Potter County, S.D. On June 2, 1930, she married Harold F. Schmidt in Napoleon, N.D. She was a farmer's wife and a charter member of Jasper County Senior Citizens and Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton. She was a longtime resident of Jasper County and moved into Newton in 1969. She enjoyed ceramics, quilting, gardening and canning.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Jontz of Newton; a granddaughter and grandson; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Lucille Harris of Rapid City, S.D., and Marie Schmidt of Climes, Calif.; and special friends, Harold, Karen, Haly and Nall of Layton, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son-in-law, Larry E. Jontz in 1991; two sisters; and a brother.
