Marsella (Bannister) Samson, 88, of Newton died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Nelson Manor in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at Community Reformed Church in Newton with the Rev. Eric Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
The family will greet friends today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Community Reformed Church in Newton or Hospice of Jasper County. Memorials may be left at the church the day of the service or at the funeral home.

The daughter of Jim and Grace (Burell) Bannister, she was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Lucas. On April 8, 1935, she married Charlie Samson in Des Moines. She was a homemaker and member of Community Reformed Church's quilting group in Newton. She lived in Prairie City until 1976, when she moved to Newton. She enjoyed quilting. She and her husband resided on a farm in rural Prairie City until retiring in 1976. They moved to Newton at that time. After retirement, she made wedding cakes and also did custodial work with her husband at several businesses, including United Presbyterian Church, for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Charles (Marilyn) Sampson of Prairie City and Ralph (Kim) Samson of Lacona; a son-in-law, Dean Jenkins of Newton; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a step-great-granddaughter; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Loraine Smith of Chariton; a sister-in-law, Minnie Bruxvoort of Pella; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son; a daughter, Anna May Jenkins; three brothers; and two sisters.
