Earl N. Hurto Jr., 83, of Park Centre died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery at a later date. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

A family visitation is planned Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in his name, First United Methodist Church, Hospice of Jasper County or Kiwanis International.

The son of Earl N. and Josephine (Svoboda) Hurto, he was born May 19, 1922, in Marshalltown. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1941 and attended Marshalltown Community College. On July 8, 1944, he married Jean A. Bailey in Ocala, Fla. He graduated from Army Air Force Eastern Flying Training Command Pilot School at Freeman Field in Seymour, Ind., in 1945. After returning to Iowa, he attended the University of Iowa and in 1949, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in commerce. He worked for Maytag Company for more than 38 years and retired in 1987 as commercial sales manager. He was coordinator of Newton Retirement Foundation Inc. and Park Centre's first marketing director, from 1988 to 1998.

Mr. Hurto was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newton since 1956 and served on several church boards, a lay leader and a member of Merri-Mates Sunday school class. He was a member of Newton Noon Kiwanis Club since 1965 and served as president in 1992 and as lieutenant governor of the Iowa-Nebraska district. He was affiliated with Newton Lodge No. 59, AF/AM, was a life member of BPO Elks No. 1270 and a member of Jasper County Historical Society, where he was a volunteer docent.

Survivors include two sons, Barry Hurto and Larry Hurto, both of Newton, several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers-in-law, Roger Bailey and Gerald Harper; sisters-in-law, Neba Bailey and Margaret Reiss; a nephew; and a niece.
