Ruby L. Thomas Ferris, 87, of Newton died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Wayne and Goldie Wallace Thomas, she was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Newton. She graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School and Des Moines Business College. In 1940, she married Forest Joe Ferris in Olathe, Kan. She worked for 20 years at Perryman's Pharmacy in Newton and retired in 1976. She was a past president of the Newton Women's Club, Newton BPW and Newton Clio Club. She was a member of Willowbrook Red Hat Society, First United Methodist Church in Newton and Church Women United. She enjoyed cats, spending time with people and dancing. She was a resident of Newton since 1953.

Mrs. Ferris is survived by a daughter, Patricia Butin of Newton; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Carolyn) Sims of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a son, Morris Firestone Jr.
