Barbara Shields Cumming, 80, of Newton died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at Park Centre in Newton.

A memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Steve Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery at a later date. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund or to the Iowa Sculpture Festival.

The daughter of Earl and Nadine (Plummer) Shields, she was born May 30, 1925, in Waukegan, Ill. She moved to Newton with her parents at an early age and graduated from Newton Senior High School and later from Stephens College in Missouri and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She was united in marriage to John Cumming on Sept. 30, 1945, in Newton.

Mrs. Cumming was a homemaker and a volunteer teacher's aide for Newton schools. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Newton Country Club, Skiff Medial Center Auxiliary, Bridge Club and the Book Club. She loved to travel.

She is survived by a son, David Cumming of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Beth Cumming of San Francisco, Calif.; and two brothers William (Nancy) Shields of Newton, and Carlton (Mary Lou) Shields of Beaverton, Ore.

Mrs. Cumming was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
