John Edward Conley, 63, of Newton died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at his home.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with Capt. Ron Cook of The Salvation Army in Newton officiating. Burial will be in the Veteran's Section of Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present at that time. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name.

The son of Eugene and Frances (O'Neil) Conley, he was born March 1, 1942, in Albia. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1960, attended one year at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa and completed four years of correspondence training through United Electronics.

He served in the U.S. National Guard and worked for Northwestern Bell, Continental and United Telephone as a telephone installer and repairman. He retired in 1985. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a son, Cody Conley of Oskaloosa; two daughters, Elizabeth Conley of Nora Springs and Heather Conley of Illinois; two granddaughters; three sisters, Mary Conley of Los Angeles, Calif., Ellen Conley of Des Moines and Teresa Lukaszewicz of Kenosha, Wis.; two brothers Pat (Robin) Conley of Tabor and Joe (Joy) Conley of Colfax; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Conley of Newton and Carol Conley of Colfax; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gene Conley and James Conley.
