TULSA, Okla. — Velma Nadine Cleveland, 90, formerly of Colfax, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, in Tulsa, Okla.

A funeral service will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax with burial following at the Colfax Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Colfax Library or Howard Street Christian Church.

The daughter of Bliss and Corda James, she was born May 11, 1915. Her school days were spent in Carlisle, where she graduated in 1933. On Dec. 22, 1935, she married DeVere Cleveland. They relocated to Perry, Okla., until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943, at which time she moved back to the farm in Carlisle. After the war, they moved to Colfax and opened a Gamble Store, which they owned until 1962.

Mrs. Cleveland worked in Newton for many years, first at Campbell, Campbell & Caldwell Law Office, then at Maytag Loan & Abstract, Jasper County Recorder's and Court Clerks' offices. Also, for several years, she and her husband operated Golf Village in Altoona. She was involved in Eastern Star, Past Matrons, Women's Club, Poinsettia, P.E.O., American Legion Auxiliary and continued to serve on the Colfax Library Board. She also was an active member of the Howard Street Christian Church.

She is survived by her son, Jim Cleveland of Tulsa; two granddaughters; two great-grandsons; two sisters, Phyllis (Dean) Person of Runnells and Doris Stuchis of Des Moines; and sister-in-law Virginia James of Carlisle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her brother, Robert James.
