John C. Britson, 87, of Newton died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newton with the Rev. Cathleen Bascom officiating. His body has been cremated. Burial will be at Roland Cemetery in Roland at a later date. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service with a coffee time at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in his name to Hospice of Jasper County. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church the morning of the service.

The son of John and Clara Iverson Britson, he was born July 23, 1918, in Roland. He graduated from Roland High School in 1936 and from the University of Iowa in 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific. He was employed by Maytag Company in 1947 and retired in 1980 as the senior design engineer in Research and Development. He has been a resident of Newton since 1947.

Mr. Britson was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newton for more than 50 years. He was an active amateur radio operator for more than 50 years and was a member of Newton Amateur Radio Association. He served on the Newton Public Library board of trustees, was a member of R.S.V.P. and a lifetime member of Maytag Management Club. He was a feature writer for Newton Daily News and wrote "Senior Focus." He also received many civic awards, including a Friend of Education Award from Newton Community Education Association and Lifetime Service Award from the City of Newton.

He is survived by his wife, Lila of Newton; a son, Gary (Laura) Britson of Des Moines; and son-in-law, John E. Billingsley of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Sherry Ann Britson and Cynthia E. Britson Billingsley; two brothers; and a sister.
