NEWTON COUPLE IS ASPHYXIATED

Mr. and Mrs. James Tough of Newton were both asphyxiated Monday night by gas escaping from an open burner in the stove in their home. They were found at 3 p.m. Tuesday by their daughter, Mrs. W.H. Castorf, who with her husband had stopped to call.

Mrs. Tough was sitting in a chair and her husband was lying on the floor near her with a wash basin in his hand. It is thought that Mrs. Tough became ill from the gas and that Mr. Tough was bringing the basin to her when he was overcome.

The radio was still turned on when the bodies were found.

Mr. Tough was 72 years old. Mrs. Tough was 75. They had lived on a farm near Newton for many years but about ten years ago moved to Newton.
