JASPER COUNTY NORMAL-The Normal opened on Monday morning with an enrollment
Of 258. The heavy rain which fell in the morning prevented many from attending the first session who otherwise would. The scene in the halls on Monday afternoon until 3 o’clock was a happy scene-all those attending Normal being congregated and engaged in renewing old acquaintances and forming new ones while the sentiment of most of the teachers was expressed at the organ in the song “Vote for Harrison and Morton,” etc. In the Superintendent’s office the Professors, Cliff, Beard, and Smith were busily engaged in receiving the registration cards and attending to the finances of the institute.

At three o’clock Prof. Dan Miller gave instructions in didactics at the Methodist Church which was largely attended.

One new feature of the Normal is the compulsory attendance of the musical drill in the M. E. Church at 7:45 a.m., conducted by Rev. D. Brown, occasioning the members to arise shortly after the little birds sing and attend roll-call.

The instructors are all present, with the expectation of Leland, and the outlook is that the Normal of 1888 will quail if not surpass the Normal of ’87, which was one of the largest ever held in the State.

The instructors of the Normal are: I. N. Beard, the former Principal at Prairie City, now of Greenfield; W. A. McCord, principle of Capital Park School of Des Moines, formerly principle of the Colfax Schools; Hill M. Bell, for many years principle of the Kellogg schools, but now occupying the chair of Mathematics in Callanan College, Des Moines; O. E. Smith, present principle of the schools of Monroe: and Dan Miller who needs no introduction as he is so well known over the county as County and City Superintendent. Supt. Cliff under whom this excellent corps work, is to be congratulated on his aids, and great will the work be done.

By Tuesday evening the enrollment reached 300 with the prospect of many more coming. The scene in the school room in the forenoon is now one of busy recitation from 7:45 until noon; in the afternoon study occupies the program with the exception of Drill in the Country School Work, by Miller, at the Methodist church from 3 to 4.

Prof. Leland, of Chicago, who is well known and liked among our teachers, will deliver a lecture to the Normal and public on Monday evening at the M. E. Church. We can safely warrant a good, profitable and interesting lecture.
