Golden Wedding - On October 27, 1836, Mr. Robert Dixon and Miss Addilla Helphrey were united in marriage at Appleton, Licking County, Ohio, by Rev. Jones. Last Wednesday evening was the 50th anniversary of that wedding and their children, grand-children, and old friends and neighbors gathered at their home in Newton, to celebrate that event. From the golden shores of the Pacific came their oldest son, J. C. Dixon; from the Sunny South came J. A. Dixon and wife, and from Kansas came Rosette Dixon and a brother of the groom, Isaac Dixon. Mrs. F. T. Campbell and Mrs. S. G. Smith, daughters of the pair, and Mrs. Belle Brown, their adopted daughter, of course were there; while last, but not least, came J. H. Strong, his wife Adda, and their daughter, of Chicago, the latter being a grand daughter and great grand daughter. Besides there were grandsons and daughters to the number of thirty. Sixty or seventy old neighbors and friends also came to join in the joyous throng, the oldest present being Grandpa Dixon, 72 years of age, and the youngest Marguerite Strong, aged 15 months. F. T. Campbell made a short and appropriate address to which Grandpa Dixon replied: "I had intended to make quite a speech on this occasion, but it has been almost all taken out of me, surrounded as I am tonight. I was born in 1815. In 1830 was left an orphan boy. After six years wandering I chose for better or for worse Addilla Helphrey, and together wwe commenced life. Two sons and two daughters have been the fruit of this marriage. All these with their companions, except one daughter-in-law on the shores of the Pacific, sit around this table. God has bountifully blest us. I do feel to return heartfelt thanks for His goodness to me and my family. Not only for our long life, but for His care over us all along these years. No one is here that was with us at our first marriage fifty years ago; and now, my children, promise to meet me in Heaven." Rev. J. G. Barton also made a few remarks, and the rest of the evening was given up to renewing acquaintances and social enjoyment. A golden wedding is a rear event, and one not witnessed by many.
