A Pleasant Surprise-We in common with a majority of the friends of Mr. August Wendt, were taken somewhat by surprise, last Friday, when he arrived in Newton from Freeport, Illinois, bringing with him a bride to preside over the elegant new home which he recently completed.

The bride was Miss Matilda Hanke, who during former visits in Newton, had formed many pleasant acquaintances and friendships among our people who now cordially welcome her to her new home. The marriage occurred at the home of the bride's brother, in Freeport, on Thursday, Aug. 25th, and was solemnized by Rev. H. Otte. Our best wishes are mingled with those of all our people, for the happiness of Mr. and Mrs. Wendt. ~ The Newton
