Dallas Hanke Has Loss by Fire

Saturday night between ten-thirty and eleven o’clock the old house owned by Dallas Hanke, northwest of town, which had been moved back to make room for the building of their fine new home, was destroyed by fire.

The building has been divided and the two sections separated. The part of the house which burned consisted of the kitchen and three bed rooms, in one of which the fire originated in some unknown manner. The fourteen year old son, who retired after the rest of the members of the family were asleep, wakened shortly before eleven to find his room full of smoke and flame. The fire was under such headway when discovered that nothing could be saved except a trunk which was pulled out through a window. All of the bedding and the furniture of the three bedrooms and kitchen were burned. The loss is about $500.

It was only through the utmost efforts of the Hankes and their neighbors and a few who went out from town, that the new house was saved. Mr. Hanke reports the house badly scorched, but not materially injured. ~ The Newton Journal, 05 Oct 1910.
