Dallas Hanke is Greatly Surprised

It was Dallas Hanke’s birthday anniversary Friday, November 25, and his wife planned a great surprise for him. She invited about seventy of their good neighbors and friends to spend the evening in their home.

The guests came all together and the son, Raymond, let them in at the front door while Mr. Hanke was sitting in the living room reading, little suspecting that a crowd of merry surprise, smothering their laughter, and with soft footsteps, were so near.

Just at the right moment, Raymond went to the front door and coming back into the room where his father was sitting, told him a gentleman wished to speak to him. Mr. Hanke said, “bring him in here,” but the son insisted that the man did not care to come into the house and when the father started to the door and had got well into the parlor, the lights were turned on and Mr. Hanke found himself surrounded by a perfect mob of revelers.

He started back and was wonderfully nonplussed for a moment but it did not take long for him to collect himself together and give them all a warm greeting.

The evening was pleasantly spent in merrymaking and an elegant three course supper was served by Mrs. Hanke and her daughter, Floy.

Mr. Hanke recently completed building and furnishing a handsome home for his family and their friends paid them many compliments on the fine large house and pleasing arrangement and the elegant comfortable way in which it had been furnished.

Mr. and Mrs. Hanke have five children and no family in Jasper county would enjoy the beautiful home more than they will.

A beautiful rocking chair was left by Mr. Hanke’s friends as a birthday gift and remembrance of the pleasant occasion. ~ The Newton Journal, 30 Nov 1910.
