Wood Family Reunion and Picnic Held at Westwood
History of Family Since Last Meeting Recorded and Read at Meeting
TOOL’S CHAPEL – The annual Wood picnic was held Sunday, July 14, 1935 at Westwood Park. Near the noon hour nearly 100 gathered around one long table.
The meeting was in charge of Walter Wood of Wall Lake, vice president. Report from the secretary, Mrs. John Wood, was read and approved. Reporting happenings since last year’s picnic, were made among those events of importance were the marriages of Helen, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Wood of Monroe and Gerold K. Northcutt of Newton, Aug. 16, 1934; Dorothy, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Robinson of Newton to Robert Kennedy of Colfax, Dec. 9, 1934; Clifford, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Romans near Reasnor to Cornelia Menninga of Pella, July 6, 1935.
The births listed were: born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Talbot of near Newton, a daughter, Roma Lee, September 17, 1934; born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Steenhoek of Monroe, a son, Henry Edward, April 29, 1935; born to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Robinson near Monroe, a son, Ray Eugene, Dec. 26, 1934; born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerold Berkinbosh of Reasnor, a son, Carroll Duane, Jan. 17, 1935; born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Robinson of Newton, a daughter, Bettie Lee, Dec. 5, 1934; born to Mr. and Mrs. Cornie Huigen of Monroe, a son, Douglas Wolcott, July 11, 1935.
The deaths were Robert, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Steenhoek, of Monroe, died July 24, 1934; Mary Wood Romans, died March 27, 1935 at the age of 94. She was the eldest of the Wood relatives. Missing: Walter, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Robinson of Newton who disappeared Aug. 24, 1933, has not been heard of; Henry Steenhoek of Monroe disappeared June 26, 1935 and has not been heard of since.
Officers elected for the year were Aaron Wood of Monroe, honorary president; Walter Wood of Wall Lake, acting president; Edmond Wood of Monroe, vice president; Mrs. John Wood of near Monroe, secretary and treasurer; Mrs. Ed Efnor of Newton, Mrs. Frank Gunsaulus of Newton, Herwehe Tool of near Monroe and Bert Wood of near Reasnor, program committee; Marvin Tool and Grant Carney of Newton, arrangement committee. Plans were made to hold the next meeting at Westwood Park, the second Sunday in July 1936.
The program included two recitations, sent by Mrs. Bertha Reese of Spokane, Wash. and read by Mrs. John Wood, entitled “Life Begins at Sixty-five” and “Covenant.”
Two selections played on the accordion by Harold Talbot; recitation by Mrs. Harold Talbot, “I* Got a Beau”, two songs were sung by Dorothy Romans, “I’ll Be in Texas Round-up in the Spring”, “May I Sleep in Your Barn Tonight”; Recitation by Walter Wood entitled “A Tramp”; two songs were sung by Dorothy Irene and Phyllis Dingamon and Darlene Gunsaulus, entitled “Out on the Lonely Prairie” and “Cow Boy Jack”; recitation by Deloris Gunsaulus, “In My Little Flower Bed”.
Song by Gladys and Ruby Guessford, “Old Shanty Town”; recitation by Phyllis Dingamon “Little Boy Blue.”
A letter from Mrs. Elmer Whitted of Colorado Springs was read by Mrs. John Wood.
