JACOB AND JANE BRAND
Jacob Brand, son of Henry and Eva Vroom Brand was born in North Holland, the Netherlands, on March 24, 1840. He married Jane Ver Heul, daughter of Kryn and Maria Shutt Ver Heul, who was born June 4, 1844, in Delft, Holland, the Netherlands, but left for New Jersey with her parents when she was one and one-half years of age. Jane received all of her education in New Jersey and later moved to Pella, Iowa. Jacob immigrated to Wisconsin at the age of nine. He grew up there and helped clear timber. He later moved to Pella, Iowa in a covered wagon. Here Jacob and Jane became acquainted and were married.

They were parents of fourteen children: Henry, married Catherine Lautenbach; Frank, married Agnes Van Gilst; Eva, Mrs. William Rykhoek; Jacob, married Florence Sesler; Ira, married Sarah Lautenbach; Minnie, Mrs. John Kooistra; Charles, married Marie Nelemans; Catherine, Mrs. Wietze Kooistra; John, Mary, Will, and Jennie, who never married, and a brother and sister who died in infancy.

Jacob and Jane spent their early life after marriage on a farm east of Pella where all of the children were born. On September 11, 1895, they purchased the farm west of Sully where Wilfred Laverman now lives from Jan Akkerman. They were neighbors of John and Katherine Elscott, the wives being sisters, who lived on the farm now owned by Marvin Baarda. Jacob was also the builder of the house where Duane Rozendaal now lives and owned the land that is the present east side of Sully known as the Brand addition, which he purchased from Dr. Carroll C. Smead on January 12, 1901. He platted thirty-five of the forty acres in September 16, 1901, for the selling of lots. This home was sold by Jacob Brand to Peter Vander Waal and he and his family, who were still at home, moved back to the farm west of town.

Jane Brand died on August 25, 1915, in the present Wilfred Laverman home and which was built by Jacob Brand in 1911. He sold the farm to Martin Zylstra in 1916. Jacob then was instrumental in moving the present house owned by Dr. K. Wilborn from the lot where William Zuidema lives and lived in this house while he built the house next door now owned by Henry Boertje. Jacob Brand died while living in this new home on July 7, 1917.

Jacob and Jane Brand were buried in the Bethany Cemetery south of Sully as the Sully Cemetery had not yet come into existence.
