BARNES, Hodgen
Farmer, Sec. 26, P.O. Monroe. He was born in England in 1823 and came to this country with his parents in 1833. They settled in Pittsburgh, PA. While in Pittsburgh, he married Miss Mary Ann THOMAS. They moved to this county in 1869. They have six children-- Mary E., Eliza B., Helen J., Sarah W., Frank C., and Jonathan Howard. Mr. Barnes is a Republican, and is a member of the present Board of Township Trustees to which he was elected two years ago. He owns 160 acres of land on a portion of which he has found several chunks of almost pure copper, and also several pieces of gold quartz rock, one piece almost the size of a large hickory nut was found to contain about three dollars in pure gold. The existence of these floats goes to prove that there may be vast gold and copper mines in the vicinity. There were two of Mr. Barnes' brothers in the army--John and William; John served three years in a PA regiment, and was honorably discharged. William died from the effect of wounds received in the front at Petersburg. ~ Fairview Township Biographies "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
