PIPER, D. D.
Retired. He was born 10 June 1810 in Herkimer Co., New York. In 1837 he went to Lenawee Co., Mich., first engaged in the drug business, which he continued about two years, then engaged in the foundry and plow business till 1865 when he removed to Newton, Iowa. He was a member of the Legislature in Michigan from 1861 to 1865. He is one of the stockholders of the Bank of Newton. He was elected Mayor in 1867 and re-elected in 1875. He married Anna FABRICK in 1829. She was born 1810 in Herkimer Co., NY. They had seven children, two living---Albert and Cornelia. Oscar enlisted in 1861, 5th I. V. I., served two years and was killed at the battle of Iuka in Sept. 1863. They lost Mary in 1877, aged 27 years; and Charlotte died in 1877 aged 34 years.~ "Newton Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
