MARTIN, R. J.
Deputy Sheriff. He was born 14 Dec 1841 in Mercer Co., PA. On 19 Jun 1861 he came to Jasper Co., Iowa. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. I, 31st Iowa V. I. He served about eighteen months, then returned to Pennsylvania, remained there till the Fall of 1864, when he returned to Iowa. He attended the State University two terms, then returned to PA. In 1870 he came to Newton, Iowa. He was appointed to his present position in 1874. He married Lizzie L. FOX 25 Sep 1866. She was born 17 Jul 1845, in Lawrence Co., PA. They had five children, two living---Kittie, born 1869, and Sadie A., born in 1873.
