NAYLOR, James B.
Attorney at law; Lynnville; born in Surry Co., N. C., July 23, 1832; here he spent his boyhood days, till, in his 20th year, he found himself without the advantages of even a limited education; he then bought his time from his father, and hired out at $6.25 per month, for the purpose of getting money with which to obtain an education; after working a year, he attended school ten months, and that was all the time he ever spent as a scholar in a school room; but, being very apt, was always found at the head of his class, much to the chagrin of the older scholars; he then taught school a year, and after that, engaged as salesman in a dry goods store in Olin, Iredell Co., N. C., in which he was very successful; but owing to failing health, was compelled to abandon it, and engaged in the cabinet business, at which he was occupied till 1857, when he emigrated to Blue Point, Poweshiek Co., Iowa; shortly after coming here, he was appointed Postmaster at Tyro, Poweshiek County, which position he held six years; was elected Coroner of the county in 1863; served one term; was then elected Justice of the Peace and served four years. He moved to this town in August, 1868, and the same Fall was elected Justice of the Peace; served two years and has since engaged in the practice of his profession in connection with his other business. Owns 120 acres, in Poweshiek County and twenty-one acres in this county valued at $6,000. Was a member of the Washington Home Guards in Poweshiek County during the war, and at the time of the murder of the U. S. Marshal in that county, was appointed Captain of the Guards and started in pursuit of the fugitives, one of whom was captured and served in the penitentiary till his death. Mr. N. married Melinda E. ARNOLD, in Lynnville, March 9, 1868; she is a native of Mahaska Co., Iowa; their children are Carrie A., born Dec. 24, 1868; Sarah E., Sept. 12, 1872, and Charles, June 30, 1874.
