MATHEWS, William R.
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 9; P. O. Lynnville; owns 815 acres in this township, valued at $25,000, and 320 acres in Elk Creek Township, valued at $6,500; is one of the most extensive stock raisers and breeders in the county, and the writer saw on his farm as fine specimens of blooded cattle and horses as he has ever witnessed. Mr. M. was born in Morgan Co., Ill., Aug. 27, 1827; first came to this county in 1847, but only stayed a few months and returned to Illinois, but soon returned again, and several visits backward and forth, he, in 1850, permanently settled in this township, where he has since resided. Married Martha A. CONOVER Oct. 15, 1850; she was born in Morgan Co., Ill., and died in Feb., 1860, aged 30 years. By that marriage he has two children living and two deceased. Richard A. resides at home; is now a student at Grinnell College; Olivia also resides at home; John L. died at Poughkeepsie, N. Y., Nov. 1876, aged 20 years; Charles F. died in July, 1860, aged 6 months. Mr. M. married again, Miss Sarah T. SHERMAN, in Jan., 1865; she was born in Brimfield, Hampden Co., Mass.
