MATHEWS, M. T.
Farmer; Sec.3; P. O. Lynnville; owns 110 acres of land, valued at $4,500; born in Green Co., Ky., Feb. 8, 1813; moved to Warren Co., Ky., with his parents when about 5 years of age; to Crawford Co., Ill., when about 8 years old, and to Morgan Co., Ill., when about 12 years old. Married Nancy SWAN in that county in 1834; she was a native of North Carolina, and died Feb. 5, 1870, in her 58th year. In 1836, he emigrated to Iowa, settling in Van Buren Co.; stayed nearly four years and returned to Morgan Co., where he remained till the Spring of 1845, when he moved to this county, settling on Sec. 9, but moved to where he now lives; his farm principally devoted to raising corn and wheat, and this year he had a very fine tobacco patch, which product seems to thrive well on his land. His children are Mary E. (now Mrs. BURTON, residing in this county), Ellen (now Mrs. SPARKS, residing in this township), Susan (now Mrs. TREASE, residing in this township), Amanda (now Mrs. SHILL, residing in Pella, Marion Co.), Jane, Richard and Jennette O.; the last three reside at home; also a grandson, John M., whom he has raised from infancy; his children deceased are George W., who died in infancy ion 1837; Mathew D., died Nov. 16, 1855, in his 3d year; Frances H. died Oct. 24, 1865, in her 7th year. ~ "Lynn Grove Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
