RUSSELL, J. L.; Grain and farm machinery dealer; Prairie City; born in Onondaga Co., N. Y., July 8, 1838; came to this county in June, 1869. Married Rachel B. COX; she was born in Ohio in 1837; they have two children-William L. and James S. Held the office of Town Trustee three terms. He emigrated from New York to Iowa in 1858 (Marion CO.), and lived there until 1869, when he came to this county, where he has resided since; he ships on an average of 200 cars of grain and produce yearly. Enlisted in the 1st Iowa V. C. in June, 1861, Co. H; was in the service three years and nine months; was in the battle of Mark's Mills, Prairie Grove, Saline River, capturing Little Rock, Ark., and Pymeta; was in all the principal battles of the regiment. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 645
