PROUNTY, Elias; Retired farmer; Prairie City; was born in Scott Co., Ky., May 15, 1809; came to this county in 1846; has 160 acres of land in Cherokee Co., valued at $4,000. Married Harriet CASSEL; she was born in Lexington, Ky., March 31,, 1813; they had eleven children, of whom nine are living-Elizabeth, Mary, Benjamin F., Sarah, David, George, Jane, Emma and Robert. Mrs. P. died Aug. 13, 1877; he emigrated to Morgan Co., Ill., in the Fall of 1833; lived there ten years and thence to Red Rock, Marion Co., Iowa, and lived there until the Fall of 1846; at the time the Indians left the county, himself and a man named RAY were the first settlers in Des Moines Tp.; was at the first election held in Polk Co.; when he came here, this county was one vast prairie, nothing but the wild beasts and Indians could be seen.
