SMITH; was twenty-four days on the road; never enjoyed himself better in his life; the first five years lived in Prairie City; helped to build the first frame building, for a man of the name of ROBINSON. Lived in a shanty 14 x 14, where fourteen persons lived through the Summer-took their meals and slept; from Prairie City went to where he now resides, on a farm when it was wild; not a tree or shrub on it; now has a very pleasant home, fine groves about his house from forty to fifty feet high; has one of the finest orchards in the county, of 1,000 trees; has a large variety of small fruit. Came to the county in very limited circumstances, but by industry and economy has made himself and family a good home. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 642
