HAMPTON, Wm. R.; Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 2; P. O. Clyde; born in Russell Co., Ky., January 5, 1830; moved to Newton, Iowa in 1850; followed shoemaking; moved thence to Des Moines, and thence to present place in 1855, which he entered in 1852. He improved farm, built a house worth $2,200; has a bearing orchard, barn, and natural hickory grove. He married Sarah M. DETER in 1853. She was born in Ohio Jan. 1, 1831. They have eleven children - T. S., Cornelia J., Caroline, Mary Aldora, Ida May, Hulda, Jennie L., Commodore C., Willie D., Russle R. and Albert J. Has 213 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Has held the office of Constable ten years; has given a share of his time to pleading la??? and attending to legal business, and doing business of like nature. He helped to organize the first school in the township; was Director for several years. He is a conservative Democrat, and they are members of the Protestant Church. Mr. HAMPTON has been a man of energy, supporting a large family; has all the comforts of a good home, which he made by his own labor. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 600.
