COUGHLAN, MAXFIELD

COUGHLAN, C. H.; Farmer; Sec. 35; P. O. Greencastle; born in Windham Co.,Vt., Oct. 17, 1828. He moved to Ohio, remained several years, and moved to Jasper Co., Iowa in 1854. He followed school teaching two years, and returned to Ohio, and married Miss S. J. MAXFIELD in Jan. 1856. She was born in Franklin Co., Ohio, June 24, 1835. She graduated in the high school at Columbus, Ohio, and taught two years in the public school. They then moved to Iowa, and Mrs. COUGHLIN then taught the second school that was taught in Clear Creek Tp. They have three living children - Henry, Willie and Joseph, and two children died at the age of 3 1/2 and 4 years. Has a good farm of 203 acres, valued at $40 per acre, with good buildings and bearing orchard, and two trees of peaches well loaded. Mr. C. has held the office of Justice of the Peace. The Union Sabbath school was the first started in this Township, and got the present of a library from the Missionary for being the first established in the township. Mr. and Mrs. C. have always taken an active part in the Sabbath school, and it has always proved an entire success, which was established in 1856. They are members of the M. E. Church; he is a Republican, and a member of the Mutual Fire Ins. Co. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 599.
