Sarah Breeden
Sarah (Lockhart) Breeden came to the Newburg community in 1865 with the wagon train headed by her son-in-law William Burroughs. Sarah's husband, Richard Breeden had died the preceding summer. Richard and Sarah were married in Jefferson County, Tennessee, August 13, 1817. They lived there until 1832 when they moved to Ripley County, Indiana. Seven of their nine children were born in Tennessee; Emeline, who died at age 1, Elizabeth Jane, Emeline II, Juliet, John, Alfred, who died at age 15, and Priscilla. Their two daughters, Melinda and Susan, were born in Indiana. Sarah's daughters, Juliet and her husband, James Harvey Mitchell, Susan and Melinda made the trip to Iowa. Susan (Breeden) Rice had lost her husband in the Civil War and she later married Darius Thomas of Newton, Iowa. In 1871, Melinda married Jesse Baker and after his death from Typhoid fever, she married Howard Durfee and they lived in Kellogg.
Sarah and her daughters lived in a house on the William Burrough's farm for several years before Sarah moved to Kellogg to spend her remaining days with her daughter, Juliet (Breeden) Mitchell.
Sarah was truly a pioneer woman. She could spin, weave cloth, dye it and make fruit candles. As a widow of a veteran of the War of 1812, she received a pension of $8.00 a month.
