John Breeden

John Breeden, son of Richard and Sarah (Lockhart) Breeden, was born January 23, 1825 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. John's father served with Jackson in the war of 1812 and his mother's maternal grandmother was Mary Boone Bryan, sister to Daniel Boone. John married Margaret Ludwick, daughter of Jacob and Hester (Myers) Ludwick, March 9, 1847 at Versailles, Indiana. John and Margaret farmed in Indiana nine years before moving to Iowa and had four children there; Emeline died at age 1, Richard, John Wesley, and William Jesse. They had two more children in Jasper County; Alfred and Harvey.

The Breeden's traveled by wagon train, arriving in Grinnell in May of 1856. When they settled, near where Raymond Brown lives now, they were the only married couple in the area. The other house in the township was occupied by a bachelor. They had traveled with their livestock because they were afraid they wouldn't find breeding stock here. John and Margaret moved to what is now the Ole Lee Farm, which they purchased. They donated the land for the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church and cemetery.

They farmed until John passed away in 1904. Margaret moved to Newburg to be nearer her children. She spent many hours weaving rugs. It was said that John and Margaret were known for their kindness and hospitality.
