In Response To: Finding a Grave! (Keith Lawrence)

Hello there,

If you are looking for ancestors who lived in Jackson County, the thing to do is look at the WPA grave registry. If you have an ancestor who lived in Jackson County before 1940 and who died before 1940 and who was buried before 1940 in Jackson County and they had a headstone, you will find it there. The Works Projects Administration went through Jackson County between 1936 and 1939 and recorded all legible headstone inscriptions and published it as a book. THey have a copy at the library of the Geneaogical Society in Maquoketa. It is alphabetical and it will let you find the location of the grave. That can also be the basis for hunting for an obituary.
