Maquoketa Excelsior – Record
January 30, 1917

Aged Resident Dead.

Miss Permelia Jane Derby, oldest daughter of Nathaniel and Elnore Derby, was born in Benson, Rutland county, Vermont, May 9, 1836, and passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. L. H. Shrigley in this city, Saturday, Jan. 27, 1917, at the age of eighty years, eight months and eighteen days. For the past thirty years she has made her home with her sister.

When a young girl she was converted and united with the Methodist church at Delmar. She never moved her membership from that place and no doubt it was due to deafness.

Her deafness was the result of not fully recovering from the measles when a young woman. Her hearing has grown worse with the years so that for some time it has been almost impossible to hold a conversation with her. She bore her affliction with much patience. It meant a lonely life and much sacrifice as it necessitated her giving up many of the pleasures of life.

Through her sickness she was kind and considerate and her mind was clear to the last. Mrs. Charles Derby and Mrs. Hopkins of Cedar Rapids assisted in the care of their aunt during her last sickness.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. L. H. Shrigley of this city and one brother, Wm. S. Derby of Cedar Rapids, also many friends who mourn her departure.

Funeral service was held Monday morning at 10:30 o’clock from the home of Mrs. Shrigley, Rev. J. J. Kidder of the M. E. church officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
