Ellen Burleson, Pioneer Resident Taken by Death

Death has again taken from our midst one of our esteemed pioneer residents; one who since childhood has watched the development of the country from the sparsely populated prairies to the highly cultivated farms and modernized cities and towns. Mrs. Ellen Burleson, after a long and active life has left us; the home at Buckhorn, which for years, aye generations, had been thrown open to friend and stranger, had been the scene of countless ingatherings where hospitality was unbounded, is now bereft of the once genial host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. F. V. Burleson, Mr. Burleson having preceded his wife in death four years ago. Mrs. Burleson found great pleasure in recounting those early day events, always permitting the happy times to overshadow the hardships incidental to the pioneer life. While she enjoyed the pleasures brought about by wide acquaintance and companionship, she took even more pleasure in meting out pleasure to others, and as she once told us “I surely love to see company come and enjoy themselves.” Active until but two weeks before her death, Mrs. Burleson prided herself in her strength and keen faculties in spite of her advanced age, and her many friends, among old and young, will miss her kindly greeting and wonderful hospitality.

Ellen Littell-Burleson was born March 23, 1845, and when but a child came to this locality and in which she has since continually resided. On October 22, 1862, she was united in marriage to Frank V. Burleson, who took his bride to the home where they lived happily through the years. When death called her husband in 1924, she remained in the old home until the end came at four o’clock Monday afternoon after an illness of about two weeks.

In 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Burleson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at which time scores of friends gathered to extend congratulations and recall the good times of long ago.

Mrs. Burleson leaves to mourn the loss of a loving mother, four children, Mrs. Ada Roberts, of this city; Mrs. W. E. Tabbs, of Des Moines; Clarence and Shade Burleson, both residing west of this city. One sister, Mrs. Emily Edwards, of this city, also survives.

The funeral services will be held from the late home at Buckhorn Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment in Buckhorn cemetery.
