Former Jackson County Veteran is Laid to Rest
(Round Lake, Wis. News)

Charles Valentine Peters was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, November 14, 1844, and died at his home near Round Lake, September 4, 1928, aged 83 years, nine months, 21 days.

At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Jackson county, Iowa, where he resided until 1907. In the spring of 1914 he moved with his family to Luck, having purchased a farm near Round Lake, where he resided until called by death.

At the age of 17 he enlisted in Co. B Sixth Iowa cavalry and served three years as company and regimental band.

After the New Ulm Indian massacre, his regiment was ordered west in pursuit and took part in the battle of Ta-Ka-Koota and White Stone Hill, and several minor engagements. In one engagement the deceased had his bugle shot from his mouth and received an arrow wound on his forehead.

After his discharge from the army he organized bands at Clinton, Davenport and Maquoketa, Iowa, and served as leader of them for several years.

In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Emily Meyers, who passed away in 1894. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom are living. They are John, Portland, Oregon; Charles, Rock Island, Illinois; Harry, Alberta, Canada; Valentine and Mrs. H. E. Wood, Forest Lake, Minnesota; Mrs. Willard Cran, Luck; and Mrs. Bessie Andrews, Rock Island, Illinois.

In 1900 he married Mrs. Belle Harder. To them were born two sons, Allen and Otis, both living at home. Besides his wife and nine children, three sisters are left to mourn his passing.

The deceased was always held in highest esteem by all who knew him. In his passing the family have lost a good husband and father and the community a good neighbor and citizen.

Mr. Peters was the last of the Civil war veterans in the Luck territory.

Funeral services were held Friday from the home and St. Paul’s church, Rev. Ernest Grill officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Bone Lake cemetery under auspices of the American Legion.
