Death Calls John Roe

John Roe was born in Danville, New York, Oct. 11, 1851, and came west with his parents when two years old. They stopped at Galena, Ill., for a short time, and went to Austin, Minn. In 1861 they moved to Jacksonville, Iowa, and while there his father enlisted in the army. The family then came to Jackson county and settled on a farm near Bellevue. At that time a soldier’s salary was but $13 a month, so young John kept the family by doing the work on the farm.

He married Margaret McCratchen in 1871, and three daughters were born to them, all of whom preceded Mr. Roe in death. His wife died in 1884. He spent a short time in Montana, and in 1907 he married Mrs. Anna Blake, who died last February. They lived a short time at Millrock, and northwest of town, until 1912, when they moved to Maquoketa.

He is well known in this community as a teamster and vegetable raiser. He has not been well for several years, and suffered a stroke Friday and died early Saturday morning. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Rose Koon, of DeWitt; and Mrs. E. A. Moles, of Sampsel, Missouri; two brothers, Will and George, who live near Bellevue; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted in the Baptist church by Rev. J. M. Carlson, and interment was made in Buckhorn cemetery Monday afternoon.
