MAQUOKETA — Leah E. Zugschwerdt, 88, of Maquoketa, died Wednesday at home.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, with the Revs. Gerald Gjerde and George Youtzy officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Chadwick (Ill.) Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Carson and Son Funeral And Cremation Services, Maquoketa.

She was born Sept. 5, 1917, in Cedar Rapids, to George and Stella Quass Youtzy. She married Nolan F. Zugschwerdt on July 11, 1941, in Cedar Rapids.

She was a 1935 graduate of Cedar Rapids High School. She earned a teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She was an elementary school teacher in Olin. In 1942 she moved to Maquoketa and became a homemaker.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, Mother’s Club, Maquoketa Garden Club and the Outlook Club. She also was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a former Girl Scout leader.

Survivors include her husband, Nolan “Zug”; children, Craig (Diane) Zugschwerdt of Arlington, Va., Steve (DeeDee) Zugschwerdt of Belfair, Wash., and Nancy (Larry) Spaulding of Chadwick; one brother, the Rev. George (Fran) Youtzy of Quincy, Ill.; one sister, Helen (Woody) White of Wyoming, Mich.; and five grandchildren.

A Leah E. Zugschwerdt Memorial Fund has been established.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
