James Sterling Sutton, 66, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away suddenly Monday, May 2, 2005, at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Burial will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa where a vigil service will be held at 5 p.m.
Jim was born May 26, 1938, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Sterling Clark and Florence Rebecca (Fowler) Sutton. He attended New Castle country school near Fulton and entered High School in Maquoketa, graduating in 1956. He took a correspondence course at Chicago Tech Institute in the field of mechanical drafting.
He worked a short time at Clinton Engines, Maquoketa, George Evans Corp., Moline, and Don Waite Construction, all the while keeping the family farm north of Maquoketa running. During this time he met and married Donna Jean Hovey on May 23, 1959, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in DeWitt, Iowa.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa, and confirmed at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek. He was a member of the Army Reserves out of Dubuque.
Jim was a devoted husband and loving and caring father and grandfather. He was a friend to everyone who met and came in contact with him. He was mentor, a good listener and always ready to lend a helping hand. He was an avid reader, especially his farm magazines. His hobbies included attending the grandchildren's extra curricular activities, especially supervising their 4-H fair projects, restoring antique tractors, woodworking, hunting, fishing and gardening.
Jim is survived by his wife, Donna Jean Sutton; one daughter, Jody Kay Sutton, one son, Jamie Daniel (and Johnna Ihns) Sutton, and four grandchildren, Alesha Katherine, Isaac James, Erica Belle and Evan Sterling Sutton, and his mother, Florence Sutton, all of Maquoketa. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Frances Hovey, of DeWitt, and an aunt, Marvel Sutton, of Moline, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sterling Sutton, his father-in-law, Max Hovey, and a brother-in-law, Donald Hovey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to your favorite charity.
