Cornelius Arian Yappen was born on the Isle of Fohr, Schleswig on the 19th day of November 1842 and died at his home in Sabula, lowa on April 5, 1917, his age being 74 years. four months and fifteen days When sixteen years of age he left the town of his birth and spent one year in Canada and from there went to California, where he joined his father in the mines. In 1869 he came to lowa and this county has been his home since that year. The greater part of the period since 1869 he spent in agricultural pursuits in Iowa township. About fifteen years ago, after gaining a competency, he moved to Sabula and purchased a farm here to spend his remaining days in well earned rest in 1871 he was united in marriage with Fredericka Flor, who with two children the oldest son Charles and the Youngest daughter, Mrs Mary Kjarsgaard, survive him. The oldest daughter, Mrs Caroline James and the youngest son John having passed away before him. He also leaves fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren: also two brothers. Adolph of Oak Park, Illinois and Reinhart C. of Ashton, Iowa. Mr Yappen was an industrious, honest citizen and a good neighbor. In early life he was confirmed in the Lutheran church and the teachings of that church he made his guide through life.

The funeral was held at the M.E. Church at 1:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Reverend J.H. Moehl, German Lutheran minister of Preston, conducting the services. The remains were followed to their last resting place in Evergreen Cemetery by a large number of friends and neighbors .
